Something happens in the last week of August. The schedule that has been improvised since June suddenly has edges again. Bedtimes come back. Mornings come back. And for the first time in three months, an evening out does not require dismantling anyone's routine.
Most parents notice this and do nothing about it, because the start of the school year is also busy. That is the small tragedy of September: it is the easiest month to go out and one of the least used.
Why Early in the School Year Is the Right Window
The routine is fresh and everyone is following it. Bedtime is a real time again rather than a suggestion. Homework has not yet become a nightly negotiation. Sports and activities have started but have not yet eaten every weekend.
By late October that window closes. Fall break travel starts, activities multiply, and the calendar fills with things that are not optional. September is the gap.
The Handoff Is the Hard Part
Ask most parents why they do not go out and the answer is rarely the cost or the plan. It is the ten minutes at the door.
Back-to-school season makes that worse, not better. A child who has just started a new grade, a new class, or a new school is already handling more transition than usual, and a night when both parents leave can land harder than it would have in June.

Dinner, homework if that is part of the evening, bath, stories, and bedtime are all in scope. You get a check-in message partway through. Every sitter passes a comprehensive background check and completes a safety orientation before her first booking.

If It Is Your Child's First Sitter
Plenty of families book their first-ever sitter in September, when the routine feels stable enough to risk it. A few things help.
Tell your child in advance and frame it as a thing that is happening for them, not a thing you are doing. Put it in the booking notes that it is their first time and mention what they are into, and the sitter will lead with that.
Book three hours rather than two for the first one. A short booking feels rushed on both sides, and three hours gives the sitter time to actually get somewhere with your kid rather than just supervising until you return.
Then book the second one before the first wears off. The families who go out regularly are almost always the ones who booked again within a month, while it was still easy.
